Philosophy of Art Education
Education is more than just textbooks, history dates, math problems, art periods and scientific equations. Schooling is a way of life—a means for one to grow from an average human being into an extraordinary presence in the world. Art education provides students of all ages and abilities opportunities to learn, develop, and mature. Through the study and practice of art, students learn essential life skills and priceless information such as critical inquiry and creative problem solving, which will push them towards success in a world where innovative ideas and groundbreaking concepts are highly desired. Art education connects children locally, nationally, and globally, allowing them to recognize and value all aspects of humanity while being exposed to a variety of cultures and customs. Therefore, my duty as an art educator is to provide and guide experiences for growth. I am a facilitator, a mentor, and a role model, bestowing upon my students the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed not only during projects in the art classroom—but also in life. Art education is the one subject that pushes learners to reflect on their intelligences and foster their own understandings that will be applied to “real world” situations. Learning is about making mistakes and discovering new solutions, and art-making is a prime opportunity for students to formulate and create novel ideas. In a supportive, constructive, and inspirational environment, I will encourage learners to discuss, question, theorize, and fashion original and fresh ideas and designs that will forever impact their lives. The subject of art presents the opportunity to shape and mold children’s lives for the better, and I strive to be the art teacher that students will remember forever.
